What happened
Servers closed January 31 2021
2K's support notice set the close date at January 31 2021. PC Gamer reported the next day that campaign and multiplayer were both gone.
Always-online including campaign
Gearbox's in-game message, quoted by PC Gamer, said campaign and multiplayer were no longer available because the servers were offline.
Battleborn launched on May 3 2016, three weeks before Overwatch. 2K later converted it to free to play. Support notices set a January 2021 server close; 2K's article listed January 31.
PC Gamer reported on February 1 2021 that Gearbox had pulled the plug. Because every mode needed authentication, owners lost campaign access as well as multiplayer. No public development budget was disclosed.
